1. Toyo Open Country H/T II - Best Highway tire
Let’s get this list going with a great choice in a premium highway-terrain tire. For some time, we’ve been pretty impressed with all the products from the Toyo line, and the Toyo Open Country H/T II is a great example of why we feel that way. If you’re not familiar with the highway terrain category, HT tires are designed for an emphasis on the refined ride quality and low noise that you would expect from Grand Touring tires, with much the same kind of traction, wear, handling, and performance as all-season tires. Toyo covers the Open Country H/T II from the factory with a 45,000 mile or 70,000 mile warranty (depending on size and speed rating), and our team gives this tire a superb 9.6 SimpleScore for longevity. Year-round grip is another real strong point with this tire, thanks to a system of multi-wave zigzag sipes, expanding shoulder grooves, and circumferential grooves that efficiently resist hydroplaning as they route water away from the tire’s contact patch for great grip in wet conditions. SimpleScore for traction: 8.3. We also appreciate the fact that steering response, road feedback, braking, and cornering dynamics are all exacting and predictable for a SimpleScore of 8.7 for handling. You can also juice up the looks of your truck or SUV with this tire - Toyo designed the Open Country H/T II to be reversible, with a plain sidewall on one side and your choice of a sporty outlined white letter design or black-letter sidewall on the other.
2. Falken Wildpeak A/T3W - Best All-Terrain tire
Next up we’ve got a great performer in the all-terrain category, the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W. According to Falken, the 3W stands for Wet, Winter, and Wear. That’s a pretty fair take; after all, the Wildpeak A/T3W does have the tire industry’s Three Peak Mountain Snowflake designation for severe winter service. Offroad traction is confident thanks to an aggressive all-terrain lug tread with a tread depth that’s a full 19/32”, along with lugs that wrap around from the shoulder onto the sidewall for improved lateral traction. That’s all we needed to see to give the Wildpeak A/T3W a SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. The Wear part of the 3W designation is also a real strong point for this tire – the Wildpeak A/T3W has a durable silica-infused tread formulation, with offroad toughness that comes from step-down features, and support ramps, a reinforced sidewall and heat dispersal technology that protects the tire’s internal construction against excessive heat buildup. Falken covers the Wildpeak A/T3W with a 55,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty, sufficient for SimpleTire to award a SimpleScore of 8.9 for longevity. The Wildpeak A/T3W is a tough all-terrain tire that doesn’t come with too big a compromise in the way of road manners and civilized behavior on the pavement, for a SimpleScore of 9.6 for handling.
3. Yokohama Geolandar X-AT - Great All-Terrain tire
Now let’s talk about another great all-terrain tire from Yokohama, the Geolandar X-AT. The Geolandar X-AT comes in with SimpleScores of 8.4 for handling, 8.3 for traction, and 9.1 for longevity, with an overall average SimpleScore of 8.6. Rugged and ready, the Yokohama Geolandar X-AT is positioned between all-terrain and mud-terrain design and performance. It features Yokohama’s damage-resistant HD-2 off-road tread compound and Geo-Shield design package that includes multiple sidewall plies, dual sidewall protectors, high-turnup casing, and a full nylon cap for stability and durability. Large shoulder blocks in varying lengths, combination grooves with a dense sipe pattern and aggressive offset center blocks all add up to excellent traction. The Geolandar’s ellipse-shaped contact patch ensures good handling and even wear. Yokohama covers the Geolandar X-AT with a 45,000 mile warranty.
4. Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T - Great All-Terrain tire
Here’s another great candidate for an all-terrain tire: the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T. The Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T gets SimpleScore numbers of 9.9 for traction, 8.8 for longevity, 9.5 for handling, and an overall average SimpleScore of 9.4. With an asymmetric all-terrain lug tread and Mickey Thompson’s Extreme Sidebiter wraparound lugs, the Baja Boss A/T has the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rating for severe winter service and is equally capable in mud, loose dirt, gravel, or other messy terrain. It’s nothing but tough, too, with a durable silica-infused tread compound and Powerply XD construction with over 50% more denier cord in its reinforcement layers, and is protected by a 50,000 mile warranty from the factory. Even with those tough off-road credentials, the Baja Boss A/T is surprisingly civilized (and quiet) on the pavement, thanks to that asymmetric tread and an optimized contact patch.
5. Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac RT - Best Rugged Terrain tire
Let’s wrap things up with a fantastic rugged-terrain tire, the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac RT. The Wrangler family of tires has been building a reputation for quality and performance for decades, and the DuraTrac model is no exception. The Wrangler DuraTrac RT builds on the success of the all-terrain version of the Duratrac. It starts with a cut-and-chip-resistant tread formulation with a built-in rim guard on the sidewall and a rim lock that prevents wheel spin. Goodyear backs the Wrangler DuraTrac RT with a 50,000 mile warranty, and SimpleTire gives this durable tire a SimpleScore of 8.3 for longevity. With a SimpleScore of 9.4, we’re pretty impressed with this tire’s traction, too. It's designed with an aggressive rugged-terrain tread that features large shoulders, highly angled center blocks, stepped shoulders, and Goodyear’s TractionGroove sipe design that multiplies grip with hundreds of extra biting edges to dig into mud, sand, gravel, and snow. Select sizes of the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac RT are pre-drilled for easy installation of #16 studs for ice traction (check your state laws for restrictions on studded tires), and the Wrangler DuraTrac RT is Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rated for severe winter service. The Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac also offers composed road manners and cornering on the highway, for a SimpleScore of 9.3 for handling. Overall average SimpleScore for the DuraTrac RT is a very strong 9.2.
